The average Barnes & Nobles carries about 100,000 titles IN STORE. That is not including the online ordering site, or college book stores. So why do we need this many books? Why is there even a Barnes & Nobles?
Start by looking at what we use books FOR:
-diets
-fantasy
-therepy
-how to..
-business
-careers
-research
-cooking......
We use books for everything. Essentially the internet was derived from the idea of a book. Google is a book's index. We look in the index to find what is inside the books and then go to the page (click the link)... If there were no books, there would have never been the internet.
Slowly paperback and hardcover books are becoming harder to find. Just recently when I went to the library to check out Hunger Games, the library referred me ONLINE! Libraries are finding it harder to finance, stay in business and pay employees. HELLO MORE JOB LOSS!
Borders recently filed for bankruptcy... why? Because no one is purchasing books from the stores, they are going online or to ebooks.
Would I miss books if they were gone? YES. I read a lot in spare time and over the summer. I can't imagine what my mom would do if she could not read Danielle Steele, and I love knowing the ending of a television show because I've already read the book it's based on.
Books are not only educational, they make people more literate and teach them ideas outside of media culture. People can think and imagine things for themselves, that's why many refuse to move away from books (Such as the lady who begged to be burned with her books in Fahrenheit 451.)

I thought it was interesting that you found the internet is basically derived from a book. That's pretty neat. I do see why book stores are closing. Our economy is getting worse and worse. The government would rather spend money on a war we will never be able to win than on really helping the people of our economy. I think that people feel like books aren't as important as clothing stores, shoe stores, etc. People have become addicted to shopping online, therefore not needing to visit stores in person. I agree with you in that having things online hurts the business of the actual stores to the point where they have to close like Border's because they can no longer afford to be there.

ReplyDeleteWow. That's pretty much all I have to say about that. I mean, it's the truth! I'll be honest, you pretty much blew my mind with those thoughts because I had never really thought about it like that before. But again, like I said, it's so true. So, obviously I really liked what you had to say about that. haha Besides that, I like your last paragraph too. Books allow for imagination. I'm no education major but I'm pretty sure the point of reading books to kids is to increase their imagination. Without it, we'd be a pretty dull society.

ReplyDeleteI absolutely love that quote because it's so true. All the information we look up online came from some kind of creditable source that was most likely in a book. I too really love books and I think its so sad that places like Borders are going out of business because of the lack of interest to buy hardcover and paper back books. I feel that if books became a thing of the past we'd really miss them, at least I know I would!
As much as I agree that books can be a great thing, there is always a downside because of the conflict they may bring. As I spoke about in my blog, I feel that certain books cause controversy among society that is unnecessary. Literature gets criticized and mocked for not being of the norm of themes we are used to reading. I think we either have to accept all that is available to us or be restrictive of what is published...
