Virtual Reality?

"... One of the ones with zombies and mutants, and they were all spinning around and shooting their fingers like guns. They couldn't see anything, just the gamefeed..."

Virtual reality games have been a hit since they first arrived on the game scene in the 1970's. When your playing the game you have a mechanism covering your eyes and the real world becomes blinded to the game. You can walk around and be playing a game in a different world!

When reading the section in Feed, I thought of virtual reality games and how familiar it sounded. But, the problem is.. We aren't happy with huge devices making a virtual reality we want something more "real." Now we have wireless video game controllers and most recently a video game that requires no controller.

Feed explains how the world is going toward, a more "realistic" virtual reality. They have embedded chips that "feed" directly into their brain. When the boys are playing the game, its a demonstration of what our technology is going toward, and in some ways it's a very scary future.

Here is a video that proves video games are making their way into our brains!

  1. That video is really interesting! I think it's crazy to think of how far video games have come and where they are going to go. Can you imagine what new technology will be next? Feed really does give us a glimpse into what a scary future could be.

  2. I'm honestly in shock after watching that video clip. I didn't realize until just now however that I'm not in shock because of how "pathetic" or "ridiculous" it is. Rather, I'm in "awe" of the gaming system. My own reaction, I think, shows a lot about the society that we live in today. Let's be honest though, who wouldn't be amazed by such an amazing invention!? I think it's undeniable that all of society, even those generations that have came before us, are interested in what new technology can bring to the table and how far it can go. For example, my dad always talks about how the technology we have today was merely dreamt of and only seen in futuristic movies when he was a child. So, again, I think that everyone, not just "our" generation is interested in how advanced technology has come. Yet, since we're the generation that is starting to utilize all of these inventions and technological advances more and more in our every day life, we are the ones being criticized. I'm pretty sure our parents weren't criticized for watching the first color television at the time. Or were they?

  3. I definitely agree with you in that the technology we are acquiring could turn into a very scary future... it is scary to think that technology could, one day, run our world, our brains, and everything in between.

As I've said in previous posts, the brain is a very very very complex tool. Once things or people find ways to manipulate it, things can go very badly. When you lose the power to think for yourself or do things for yourself, who are you? Are we going to become, as humans, a piece of technology?

  4. That video reminded me of the movie, "Gamer" with Gerard Butler. The gaming system used in the movie was where a player actually controlled another human in real-life combat. There life was practically in the hands of that player. The players movements were transmitted to that other "player/human". It was incredible to think that our future could hold that actuality for us. It's scary to think that virtual reality may become actual reality...
